We think that it is going to be a spectacular June for the IOD class, and we look forward to presenting you with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
As you know, there are two special regattas planned and many ways for you to participate. In this update, we will bring you up to speed with the New England Challenge, the 2011 IOD World Championships, the IOD Jubilee Celebration, and provide you with more information on how you can directly participate in these events.
THE NEW ENGLAND CHALLENGE
It doesn’t matter if you have a wooden spar or an aluminum one, or if you sail a single or double spreader rig. We would love to see you here. *Note that if you sail a boat with the Kenyon/Forespar rig and are willing to loan your boat to the Worlds the following week, we will waive your entry fee for the Challenge event!
Don’t want to bring your boat to Marblehead, but want to bring a team and compete? Consider chartering a boat. We believe that there may be two or three boats that might be made available for charter at this event. If you are interested in chartering, we will try to put you in touch with the owners and help shepherd the chartering process forward so you can compete.
regatta dinners are planned for Friday and Saturday nights and a simple
post-racing awards ceremony, featuring the EYC’s world-famous clam
chowder will cap the weekend on Sunday afternoon. These three events, plus daily breakfasts at the club, will be incorporated into a modest social package (approx $115).
If you don’t have a boat, or don’t want to charter, you can still participate. Please let us know that you would like to sail, and we will try to arrange for you to join one of the competing teams for this three-day event.
The NOR for the New England Challenge will be forwarded next week.
2011 IOD WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
The open, unprotected waters off Marblehead have always proven to be a great test for prospective champions and the anticipated fresh June breezes should make the competition intense.
A 17-19 boat racing fleet is anticipated, including boats from Marblehead, Nantucket and Fishers Island. Each
current fleet is sending one representative and the largest IOD fleets
should be in line to receive a second invitation to the regatta. We plan to start the second invite process in early/mid-April.
IOD JUBILEE CELEBRATION
On Thursday June 16, we will hold the Jubilee Dinner under the tent at the Eastern Yacht Club. This
special evening will be highlighted by a presentation of the IOD Class
history, as developed and organized by Sandro Vitelli and Herb Motley. They will provide a sneak preview of the upcoming class history book for all to see.
On Friday June 17, we will gather again for the 2011 IOD World Champions Dinner. We will honor all the competitors and crown the 2011 IOD World Champion. The gala evening will be full of commemorative touches, anecdotes and ceremony.
events will be integral parts of the 2011 IOD World Championship, but
will be offered to IOD World Class Fleet members, alumni and friends
through a special two-day package. The Jubilee Social
Package will include tickets to the Thursday night Jubilee Dinner and
the Friday night Champions dinner, local housing on Thursday and Friday
nights, access to on-the-water spectator boats on Thursday afternoon and
Friday to view the final races of the Championship week, plus post-race
socializing. The package price is expected to be around $225.
For more information about any of these programs, or to be added to the list of prospective charterers and sailors, e-mail Greg Mancusi-Ungaro (firstname.lastname@example.org) or call 781.639.4039.
